In the Respira Amazônia coalition, we join the public and private forces with a single purpose: Strengthen air quality monitoring in the Amazon region.

Our work focuses on supporting initiatives to monitor, collect and analyze data on air pollution in the Amazon. Coalition partners and members use a variety of technologies, especially low-cost equipment, to analyze data and promote the broad dissemination of knowledge.

We seek to help the region’s population understand the quality of the air they breathe. Furthermore, we support decision-makers in formulating policies that protect the people’s health and the integrity of forests.

First connections

In November 2023, the First Amazon Air Monitoring Meeting was held, an initiative of Instituto Ar in partnership with the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change, IPAM, the Federal University of Acre, and Woodwell Climate.

The event was the starting point for the meeting of professionals and institutions interested in exchanging experiences and strengthening air monitoring in the territory. Several Federal Universities, Public Prosecution Offices, Environmental Departments, Health Departments, Public Managers, and civil society players were present.

The Respira Amazônia Coalition is born

The event participants expressed interest in continuing to work together, giving rise to the Respira Amazônia Coalition. This was the first step towards creating a collaborative work network dedicated to improving air quality, uniting efforts from various entities representing all states in the Legal Amazon.

This new collective effort revealed incredible potential to expand the activities of all participating institutions by continually seeking new opportunities for collaboration, sharing technical knowledge, and learning directly from the ground.
