Taking care of the Amazon air means taking care of our and the planet's health.

Learn about our actions to promote air monitoring in the Amazon region

Air pollution in the Amazon is a serious problem.

Burning and other activities in the region are affecting health and the environment as a whole.

Respira Amazônia is an intersectoral and independent coalition of public and private entities dedicated to strengthening air quality monitoring in the Legal Amazon.

Respira Amazônia - Amazônia no Escuro

Amazon in the dark

According to recent data, only 13 of the 27 Brazilian states have automatic air monitoring stations, and over 80% are in the Southeast. In the Legal Amazon, the lack of official monitoring prevents effective policies, leaving the population, decision-makers, and environmental and health agencies in the dark about the risks of pollution.

Deforestation is the main source of emissions

According to SEEG, in 2021, Brazil emitted 2.4 billion tons of greenhouse gases, an increase of 12.2% compared to 2020, mainly due to deforestation in the Amazon. Agricultural expansion and burning transform the landscape and air quality, putting biodiversity and the population’s health at risk.

Health at risk

Research by Nature reveals that 15 million cases of respiratory infections and cardiovascular diseases occur every year, at a cost of USD2 billion, and are associated with fires on indigenous lands in the Legal Amazon. Pollutant particles can spread up to 500 km, affecting neighboring states and countries.

Information is power

We are committed to providing essential air pollution data, empowering decision-makers to create more effective policies, and protecting public health.

Several projects in the Amazon are expanding air quality monitoring with low-cost sensors. Below, we highlight two important cases.

Monitoring Network in Acre
Created to address the lack of data on air pollution, the sensor network in Acre was implemented in 22 municipalities with support from the Prosecution Office of the State of Acre and the Federal University of Acre. Even with governance and resource challenges, the data generated helped mobilize the population and government agencies about the impacts of wildfires.
SELVA Platform
Developed by the State University of Amazonas, the SELVA platform monitors atmospheric pollution in Amazonas with the support of sensors and satellite data. Its purpose is to provide fast information to help the population and governments combat the effects of wildfires and improve quality of life.
Project for expansion of the Legal Amazon monitoring network - IPAM
60 new low-cost sensors were installed throughout the Legal Amazon by the Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM) and the Woodwell Climate Research Center, monitoring not only cities, but also Indigenous and agricultural areas. The data shows pollution levels above those recommended, reinforcing the need to increase monitoring
Redt Amazonas
In partnership with South Korea, the Amazonas State Government will install 100 sensors in all its municipalities by 2024, integrating data into the SELVA platform and strengthening environmental management in the region.

We believe in the power of collaboration.
